Counselling Psychology FAQ

Is it so bad that I want to go to therapy?

Many believe that hitting “rock bottom” is necessary before seeking counselling, but this is a misconception.  People seek the support of qualified professionals for various reasons, ranging from preventive measures to navigating crises. Whether you’re seeking insight, guidance during a life transition, assistance with change, coping with pain and hopelessness, or processing past traumas, counselling can help.

What does a first session look like?

During your initial session, your therapist will discuss informed consent, confidentiality, the counselling process, and the risks and benefits of therapy. After this, you will have an opportunity to share what is bringing you to counselling.  During this time, typically, questions are asked about your history that may be related to your present concerns. We will work collaboratively to form goals and decide on approaches that are best suited to you based on the changes you hope to experience.

How long are the sessions?

Most of our sessions are an hour, with 50 minutes for the client and 10 minutes allocated for charting notes. However, we also offer sessions that are 1.5 hours and 2 hours, depending on the client’s needs. Be sure to discuss these options with your therapist.

How frequently do I need to attend?

The frequency and number of sessions vary from client to client—this depends on several factors and will be discussed with you during your initial session. However, it is common to see clients come weekly, biweekly, and even monthly, depending on the client and therapist’s schedules and/or the severity of the client’s distress.

Can I book an appointment with a friend, family member, spouse, etc.?

Reaching out to schedule a counselling session can be daunting, and having the support of someone close to you can make it easier. If you’re reaching out on behalf of a friend or family member, we are happy to discuss available services with you. However, to complete the booking, the individual who will be the client will ultimately need to consent to counselling services personally. This confirms their engagement in the counselling process.

Do I need a referral from a doctor to attend?

You do not require a referral from your doctor to attend counselling, though if you have seen either, we welcome any information they may wish to provide.

Is Counselling Psychology covered under my extended health insurance?

Counselling psychology provided by a provisional or registered psychologist is covered by most extended health insurance in Alberta; however, the total dollar amount or percent of coverage will vary by provider.  Also, not all insurance providers offer direct billing, while others do.  Please contact your insurance provider for further information.
